An internationally recognized animation studio is opening in Cebu and they’re hiring

With the slowdown of live-action filming, animators in the Philippines are in high demand. In fact, 90% of the world’s animations are produced in Asia with the Philippines being a major global outsourcing hub, currently earning revenue between $20 million to $30 million. This is owed to its competitively priced labor offering a range of technical skills, including competence in the English language.

For a long time, the Filipino animation industry was faced with the challenge of distributing its growth outside of the National Capital Region. However, with the opening of Cebu’s Toon City Academy (TCA), a small solution to this problem might be over the horizon.

Toon City is a Filipino animation studio whose clients include The Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon, Universal, and Warner Bros., among others. TCA is the official training arm of Toon City, led by the instruction of veteran Filipino animators, and its Cebu City branch is scheduled to start operations this June.

Roderico Rene de Guzman, vice president of Toon City and chief operations officer of TCA, believes Cebu can develop into a major hub for animation, potentially increasing the local industry’s earnings to 1% of the $270 billion global animation industry. He also states how demand for these services is raising wages for Filipino animators, who earn between Php 24,000 to 25,000 every month, going as high as Php 100,000 — this includes animators without a degree, which comprises 60% of the industry’s labor force.

“Toon City is looking for animators. There’s a lot of work, and we know for a fact that people in Cebu are very talented,” de Guzman said. “We would like to expand our reach by asking the young people of Cebu to join Toon City or Toon City Academy.”
